A Description of Woman in Patriarchal Batak Toba Tribe

Abstract

This paper discusses the interdependence of woman position in Batak Toba society and the position of woman as well. The theory applied in describing the gap phenomena of man and woman is related to hierarchy of patriarchy status in Batak Toba people. It is stressed that patriarch system seems to admit the position of man is higher than woman in which woman becomes dependent on man power. In addition, the method is named qualitative in terms of describing the data up to taking conclusion. The data are wrapped up in the form of information about patriarch system in Toba Batak society. Patriarchy social system is supposed to be strong that will not be ended in Batak Toba. It emphasizes how woman is dependent on man to support that patriarch system continuously.
