According to Javanese beliefs in Mangga Dua Village, if a relative or neighbor dies, the community must and must cook a dish, namely a traditional Javanese food called Gebing. Gebing is a food made from half-old coconuts which is still maintained by the people of Mangga Dua Village and is only made and served at certain times, namely only when someone dies because according to local community beliefs, Gebing is a very sacred food and must be made because gebing has a symbolic meaning which assumes that this food is a sign of releasing the teeth of a deceased person. In writing this thesis, this was the background for the author, so he was interested in studying it with the title "The symbolic meaning of gebing at death ceremonies for Javanese people in Mangga Dua Village, Serdang Bedagai Regency." That is, this tradition is only carried out during death ceremonies. However, when there are other safety events, this gebing cannot be made because if it is broken it will be hit by reinforcements. This gebing has been passed down from generation to generation by our ancestors. This research was carried out using qualitative methods, which aimed to identify the problem contained in the title of the thesis, explain the symbolic meaning of gebing, why it is still maintained to this day, as for the data taken to explain this research by using documentation, interviews and observation. The results of this study explain the reasons why gebing is served only on days 3, 5, 7, 100, only. Gebing was carried out by our ancestors beforehand so that it is still maintained today. Gebing is a sign of respect for the deceased because the gebing is symbolized by the release of the teeth of the deceased.en_US
