This research is entitled Analysis of the Reception of Writing News through the Book If I Were
a Tempo Journalist by Goenawan Mohamad for the Pijar Student Press Journalists at the
University of North Sumatra. This research aims to determine the reception of journalists from
the USU Pijar Student Press towards the book If I Were a Tempo Journalist regarding the
publication of news about Media Depravity in Indonesia written by the anonymous Jilbab
Hitam. This research uses Stuart Hall's reception analysis theory which explains the audience's
meaning of messages received from media. This research uses a qualitative approach with
descriptive methods. The data collection techniques used were interviews and observation. The
number of informants in this study consisted of five people. Four of them are journalists from
Pijar Student Press of North Sumatra University (USU) and one of them is a Kompas.com
journalist as a triangulation informant. The result of this research is the use of the book If I Was
a Tempo Journalist among USU Pijar Student Press journalists, namely as a book that provides
information about how to write news, especially features. The book helped the four informants
provide knowledge that they had not previously obtained and also gave them motivation on
how to write news. The results of this research show that the four main informants fall into
three categories according to Stuart Hall. One informant was categorized as dominant, two
informants were categorized as negotiating, and one informant was categorized as opposition.
However, the four informants still accepted the knowledge provided by Tempo but were less
likely to trust Tempo's reporting in the future.
