Representasi Perempuan Independen dalam Novel Aroma Karsa (Analisis Semiotika Novel Aroma Karsa Karya Dee Lestari)
Abstract
This research is entitled Representation of Independent Women in Aroma Karsa Novel
(Semiotic Analysis of Aroma Karsa Novel by Dee Lestari). This study aims to examine how
the representation of independent women according to Baxter and Emily W. Kane
contained in the Aroma Karsa novel by Dee Lestari. The data that has been collected will
be analyzed using the Roland Barthes semiotic theory analysis method. This research uses
a qualitative approach with an interpretative method that requires researchers to argue in
interpreting the object under study. The data collection method used in this research is
collected directly from the text written in the novel and with library research. This research
also uses analysis with Roland Barthes's five semiotic codes. The results of this study show
that there is a representation of independent women at the social and individual levels in
the female characters in the Aroma Karsa novel. Of the 34 lexia studied, there are 14 lexia
that discuss the character of Raras Prayagung. Independent female characters are found
in Raras Prayagung. At the social level, Raras has a form of political independence,
independence from male authority and power in decision-making, and independence from
male power in defining social reality. While at the individual level, Raras shows forms of
independence in work and family relationships. In work, Raras shows economic
independence in the form of abilities and positions that allow her to fulfill her life needs
and survive in the world. In addition, Raras also has a form of independence from male
protection against other men's violence. Finally, in family relationships, Raras also shows
a form of independence related to psychological fulfillment through feelings of love and
intimacy.
