    Abstract
Regional Languages are local sciences produced by each community group and form their identity, one of which is Batak Toba Language. Preservation of Regional Languages can be done by way of language inheritance to the next generation. Today, the younger generation is faced with a lot of foreign language learning such as English and others that shift the position of regional languages. The entry of Batak Toba Language in subjects at school became an effort to preserve language aimed at young speakers. Presentation of learning in schools will be dealing with student responses shown in language attitudes. This research examines efforts to preserve local languages carried out in schools as well as student responses as subjects of preservation of local languages. Data is taken through observations and interviews at learning organizing schools that are in the environment of the majority of Batak Toba language users. This research utilizes the results of field observations as well as interviews involving the Principal, Regional Language Subjects Teacher, and also students at each level as informants. The results found that there were indications of language shifts that occurred in students in Private Middle School Budhi Dharma Balige through several factors, especially the lack of respect for regional languages in students. This happens because of the cognitive, affective, and conceding components of student attitudes. This attitude is formed through different language orientations among students, and the majority of students are not involved in Batak Toba language communication by their family environment. This finding highlights the importance of family relations and the education system in supporting regional language preservation activities in the younger generation. Pelesetarian effort activities carried out in schools need to be supported by providing space for students to get used to and engage in Batak Toba-language communication both through learning in schools, the environment and in the family
