A Description of Figurative Meaning in Olivia Rodrigo’s Selected Songs Through Sour Album

Abstract

Figurative language has an important role in literary works. One of them is song lyric. Many songwriters write their songs using figures of speech for the deep message they want to convey to their target. Therefore, the aim of this study is to find out how many figures of speech are contained in the lyrics of Olivia Rodrigo's song on the "Sour" Album. This research examined at the metaphorical language of an Olivia Rodrigo song's lyrics. The researcher also tried to analyze the kinds of figurative meaning used in. The data studied were analyzed qualitatively to see the types and meanings contained in the song. The researchers found 23 data contained in figurative language in the album "Sour" by Olivia Rodrigo. Hopefully this research is useful and also provides benefits for everyone to understand more about figurative contained in song lyrics. In addition, this research is expected to be able to contribute as a medium for language styles learning because songs are loved by many people so that teaching will be interesting. Use regular phrases refer to something without saying it directly. The data were taken from Olivia Rodrigo Songs. Knickerbocker and Reninger's (1963) theory were utilized to analyze the data, while theory was used to examine the meaning of figures of speech employed. The analysis was done by Abrams M. H. (1999). applying descriptive qualitative methods with observation and noted taking techniques to acquire data.
