Background. Depression refers to a mental health disorder manifested through indicators such as decreased interest, feelings of sadness, disappointment, sleep disturbances, and concentration difficulties. The age group of 18-29 years, particularly students, is vulnerable to depressive symptoms, influenced by determinants such as academic pressure, family economic conditions, social isolation, living environment, and social adaptation. Given the variations in previous studies regarding determinants of depression, further analysis is needed to identify the most prominent determinants triggering depression, especially within the scope of students at the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Sumatera Utara. Subjects and Methods. This study employed a case control design using questionnaires as data collection tools, measuring depression, academic stressors, loneliness levels, adaptation skills, allowance, and student residence. The research sample consisted of students from the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Sumatera Utara, selected through consecutive sampling, and the study was conducted within the Faculty's environment. The dependent variable in this research is the occurrence of depression, with independent variables being academic stress, adaptation skills, loneliness levels, student residence, and allowance. The data analysis methods employed were Chi-square correlation tests and logistic regression. Results. With total 200 subjects in this research, the results of this study demonstrate a significant correlation between the factors of stress incidence with the occurrence of depression (OR=2.401; P=0.001). Academic stress factors emerge as the dominant cause of depression among medical students at FK USU. Conclusion, it can be inferred that academic stress is contributing factors to the occurrence of depression among students. These findings underscore the importance of identifying and implementing appropriate interventions for these factors in the effort to prevent depression.
