Background. Schoolbag is a must have item to bring student’s belongings to the
school and often associated with complaints of musculoskeletal pain and the
relationship with interference some aspects of life. Aim. To find out the
correlation between schoolbag use with complaints of musculoskeletal pain on
neck, shoulder, back and waist in highschool students. Methods. This is the
descriptive analytic research with cross sectional as the research design. The
population in this research are 12th grade highschool students of SMA Negeri 3
Rantau Utara. The sample size was 70 highschool students with systematic
sampling technique. Results. The majority of respondent were female and had a
normal BMI. The most widely used type of bag is a backpack which is worn using
both shoulders. Half of the total respondents use bags with weight of less than
10% of their body weight. Most respondents used bags for 10-25 minutes duration
with more than 5 km distance and used motorbike transportation. Conclusions.
There is a correlation between the weight of schoolbag with complaints of
musculoskeletal pain in the shoulder (p=0.024). There are correlations between
the duration of using schoolbag with complaints of musculoskeletal pain in the
neck with p value = 0.012 and shoulders (p=0.003). There are correlations
between the distance traveled to school with complaints of musculoskeletal pain
in the neck (p = 0.042) and back (p= 0.017). There is a correlation between the
type of transportation with complaints of musculoskeletal pain in the back with (p
= 0.001).
