Background: Lung carcinoma is a malignancy in the lungs that arises in the
respiratory tract and involves the abnormal proliferation of bronchial epithelial
cells that damage normal tissue. Lung cancer is the most common cause of the
highest number of deaths due to cancer in 2020. Objectives: This research was
conducted to determine the characteristics of lung cancer patients at Haji Adam
Malik Regional General Hospital in Medan from 2020 to 2022. Method: This study
is a descriptive observational research with a cross-sectional approach. The
population consists of 196 lung cancer patients, and data were collected using total
sampling and analyzed statistically using the Chi-square method. Results: The
trend of inpatient visits for lung cancer at RSUP H. Adam Malik Medan from 2020
to 2022 has increased by 27 cases (13.8%). The highest frequency of lung cancer
patients based on sociodemographic factors was found in the age group of 46-65,
with a total of 124 individuals (63,3 %), and among males, with 147 individuals
(75%). The primary complaint was shortness of breath, reported by 162 individuals
(82.7%). A history of smoking was present in 97 individuals (49.5%), all of whom
were smokers. The histological type identified was adenocarcinoma in 109
individuals (55.6%). There was a statistically significant relationship between age
and gender, as well as between gender and smoking history.
