    Abstract
Scavengers face numerous health risks due to exposure to pollutants from decomposing materials, as well as increased heat and sunlight affects their skin, leading to health issues. Personal hygiene and basic sanitary conditions of residence also influence health of scavengers. This research was conducted to analyze personal hygiene and basic sanitation of residences with health complaints from scavengers at TPA Terjun. This type of research is descriptive. Data analysis was carried out by interviews using questionnaires with 74 families/scavengers. Research results showed there were 65 male scavengers (87.8%) and 9 female scavengers (12.2%). Majority of participants (55.4%) were in 36-45 age range, with general age range spanning between 26-55 years. Most recent education was junior high school, namely 37 people (50.0%). Over 8 hours was the maximum daily work period for 46 people (62.2%). Highest length of work was in range 11-20 years, amounting to 33 people (44.6%). Personal hygiene behavior that is least commonly carried out is maintaining clean nails, with 55 individuals (74.4%). Aspect of basic sanitation of residences most frequently stated as not meeting requirements was presence of uncovered rubbish bins, with 56 houses (75.7%). The study unveiled that 62 individuals (83.8%) experienced diarrhea, 60 individuals (81.1%) complained of shortness of breath, and 58 individuals (78.4%) had coughs. It is expected that scavengers will uphold proper hygiene and sanitation at their domicile. The Head of Medan Marelan Subdistrict and Community Health Center must educate the locals on significance of hygienic practices and repercussions of neglecting them.
