Abstract
Diabetes Mellitus is a serious threat to public health and has entered the top ten causes of death in the world, with a significant percentage increase of 70% since 2000. According to data from the International Diabetes Federation in 2021, Indonesia ranks fifth out of the top ten countries with the highest prevalence of Diabetes Mellitus at 8.5%, based on blood sugar measurements taken in 2018. Based on the results of a survey conducted at Sidikalang Regional General Hospital, DM patients who came for treatment in 2022 were 1,906 people with a prevalence of 0.04%. The aim of this research is to determine the relationship between sociodemographics and lifestyle with blood sugar levels on Diabetes Mellitus patients at Internal Medicine Polyclinic of Sidikalang Regional General Hospital in 2023. This study utilized an analytical cross-sectional design. The sample consisted of 120 DM patients who sought treatment at Internal Medicine Polyclinic of Sidikalang Regional General Hospital using purposive sampling technique. The research instrument used was a questionnaire. Univariate data was analyzed descriptively, while bivariate data was analyzed using the chi-square test with a 95% confidence level. The results of this study indicate a significant relationship between age (p=0.000), dietary patterns (p=0.001), and physical activity (p=0.001) with the blood sugar levels on DM patients at Internal Medicine Polyclinic of Sidikalang Regional General Hospital in 2023. In conclusion, both sociodemographics and lifestyle factors have a significant association with the controlled or uncontrolled blood sugar levels in DM patients. Based on these findings, it is recommended that individuals, especially those aged ≥45 years with DM, adopt a healthy lifestyle by adhering to the 3J dietary program for DM and engaging in regular physical activity to effectively control blood sugar levels.
