    Abstract
The sport of skateboarding has evolved into a popular activity among young people, giving rise to a new subculture characterized by various styles and values. The objective of this research is to describe the skateboarding community and the emergence of the skateboarding industry in the city of Medan. Additionally, it aims to understand the latest developments in the skateboard community in Medan, showcasing the practical application of anthropological principles in the realm of popular culture. The study also seeks to identify current opportunities for the growth of the skateboard community in Medan. The research employs a descriptive approach with qualitative analysis, utilizing interview processes and participatory observation. Six informants are involved in the study. The findings reveal that skateboarding holds significance as a subculture that has evolved, where young people perceive it not only as a form of self-actualization but also as a space to develop talents and influence their needs through collaborations with sponsors. The skateboard community views skateboarding as a lifestyle. Skaters join this community to gain knowledge about skateboarding. The network between the skateboard community and the skateboard industry is a complex and mutually beneficial relationship. Recommendations from this research include advocating for the opening of public spaces to accommodate the emergence of skate parks in Medan. Furthermore, the lifestyle aspect of the skateboard subculture should be recognized as an asset for the younger generation in dealing with the negative impacts of substance abuse, in line with the perspective of sports anthropology.
