| dc.description.abstract | The background in this study is ulos known as the typical fabric of the Batak
tribe have different functions from each other motivated by the use of the ulos and in
accordance with custom. Ulos Saput, Ulos Tujung, and ulos Tutup Batang are some
of the ulos that are quite important in the traditional ceremony of saur Mata Batak
Toba, which is an important ulos in the ceremony. The purpose of this study was to
determine the function of ulos saput, ulos tujung, and ulos lid stems and to determine
who is the giver and recipient ulos saput, ulos tujung, and ulos lid stems. This study
was conducted using descriptive qualitative methods and data collection techniques,
make observations to the field, build rapport, and conduct in-depth interviews
(interview guide) to obtain more accurate data. The results showed that ulos saput,
ulos tujung, and ulos lid STEM have their respective functions. Ulos saput is the last
ulos received from hula-hula, which is given to the deceased bere. Ulos saput has a
function as a membrane, or commonly worn on the body to envelop it. Ulos tujung is
ulos given to an abandoned husband or wife. Ulos tujung is imposed on the head from
the abandoned spouse. For the giving party is the parent of the abandoned spouse
himself. Ulos tujung serves to comfort the couple left by the body. Ulos lid trunk is
ulos placed on the coffin by the parents of the wife of the first child (besan). Ulos
tutup batang has a function as the cover of the deceased custom, and ulos tutup
batang will be handed over to the first boy to continue the custom of his parents. The
discussion in this study ulos is a very important part for the Toba Batak community,
especially as a form of parental affection for children or a form of hula-hula affection
for berenya. Ulos saput and ulos tujung also have values that are believed by the Toba
Batak people, namely the value of blessings, the value of compassion, the value of
