dc.description.abstract | Instagram social media is now a means of self disclosure. Self disclosure may be in the realm of user privacy. This can pose various risks to Instagram users. This research aims to reveal and understand how someone manages the privacy of their Instagram account using qualitative research methods. This research refers to a descriptive approach with in-depth interview data collection techniques with 5 informants. The theory used in this research is communication privacy management proposed by Sandra Petronio. The results of this research reveal that each informant has different information limits regarding their privacy. Through the communication theory of communication privacy, it was also found that there are regulatory criteria used by Instagram users to consider when disclosing information via Instagram. Cultural criteria such as customs, norms and religious values that exist among users. Gender criteria in the form of gender expression and clothing. The motivation criteria are in the form of encouragement and feelings of happiness, the context criteria are positive things, not offending other parties and also environmental conditions. Risk criteria such as a comparison between the amount of profit or loss that users will receive after making a disclosure. In this research, the way users managed their Instagram privacy was by deciding not to reveal their privacy at all on Instagram, or make an alternative choice by creating a second Instagram account. The second account is only followed by people closest to and trusted by the user, which gives him more freedom to reveal his privacy. | en_US |
