The progress of a city's development cannot be separated from
transportation development, so it can be said that transportation is the key to
accelerating development in various fields. The increase in mobility of
community activities in the Central Market area of Medan City cannot be
separated from the existence of market activities which is a class 1 market in
Medan City, this causes an increase in the number of vehicles which causes
transportation problems such as high traffic density and traffic conflicts at
intersections. This research aims to identify and address transportation issues
within the Medan City Market Center. As one of the largest markets in Medan and
categorized as a Class 1 market, the market center faces significant challenges,
specifically concerning frequent traffic congestion which has reached a critical
level. These issues not only compromise the economic function of the market but
also affect its physical and financial aspects. This research aims to address the
following questions; (1) What is the current condition of the Medan City Market
Center? (2) How can transportation issues in the market center be effectively
resolved? To assess the transportation situation within the Medan City Market
Center, a transportation control model was adopted. Direct observations were
conducted, and the collected data were analyzed using Vissim software. By
personally observing the existing issues, a comprehensive understanding of the
transportation situation was gained. The results indicated substantial
transportation challenges, particularly traffic congestion, hindering the economic
activities within the Medan City Market Center. Considering the absence of an
ideal solution to these transportation issues, a transportation control model
approach will be employed to enhance the transportation system in the market
center.
