The Mobility of Javanese Ethnic Women Who Work in The Realm of Village Government Through Education in Percut Sei Tuan Sub-District
Abstract
The issue of women in the old mindset of Javanese ethnic society dominates men in the public sphere (work outside the home) and women only in the domestic sphere (housework), one of which is Javanese ethnic women in Percut Sei Tuan District. By leaving the old mindset in the Javanese ethnic community which triggers mobility or an increase in the difference between parents and children, it opens the mind to provide better education to their children including women to continue their education to the undergraduate level, by participating in the government space slowly raising the social status of individuals in society. This study aims to describe how education in raising the social status of Javanese ethnic women with educational capital owned in Percut Sei Tuan District. This research uses James S. Coleman's rational choice theory including actors and resources. The method used in this research is descriptive research method with qualitative approach. The data obtained is the result of research through observation, documentation, and in-depth interviews with several informants. This research was conducted with 12 informants who are Javanese ethnic women in Percut Sei Tuan District. The results showed that education is the initial capital for women to enter the public sphere where the entry of women as workers in the government sector also changes their social status, this is influenced by indicators in mobility, namely changes in living standards, residence, and behavior. And some things that affect mobility are structural factors and individual factors. With several factors that support and influence mobility, such as parents who provide opportunities for their children to pursue education up to university level, so that they get the opportunity to work in the realm of government which makes the social status of Javanese ethnic women who work as village staff in Percut Sei Tuan District increase.
