    Abstract
Introduction. The prevalence of oral candidasis increases in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus especially if uncontrolled (HbA1C≥7%). This occurs due to dysbiosis and changes in oral microbes, especially Candida sp. Several studies have shown that binahong plant extract has activity as an antifungal on Candida sp. Objective. To determine the antifungal effectiveness of binahong leaf extract mouthwash preparation against the growth of Candida sp. colonies in the oral cavity of uncontrolled type 2 diabetes mellitus patients. Methods. This study used a true experimental method with a group pretest-posttest control design. Data were obtained from the Candida sp. colonies counting in saliva samples of uncontrolled type 2 diabetes mellitus patients (HbA1C≥7c) which were divided into 2 groups, the treatment group given a mouthwash preparation of binahong leaf extract (Anredera cordifolia (Ten.) Steenis) using a concentration of 12.5%. and the control group using aquades. Results. Of the 32 samples, there was an increase in the growth of Candida sp. colonies in the oral cavity (≥400 cfu/ml) during the pre test in 19 samples, 9 samples (56,3%) in the control group and 10 samples (62,5%) in the binahong group while during the post test the was an increase in 16 samples, 10 samples (62,5%) in the control group and 6 samples (37,5%) in binahong group. Based on the results of statistical analysis, there was a significant decrease in Candida sp. colonies before and after giving 12.5% binahong leaf extract mouthwash (p-value <0.001) and there was a significant difference between giving 12.5% binahong leaf extract mouthwash and aquades (p-value <0.001). Conclusion. Binahong (Anredera cordifolia (Ten.) Steenis) leaf extract mouthwash preparation can reduce the growth of Candida sp. colonies in the oral cavity in uncontrolled type 2 diabetes mellitus patients.
