    Abstract
    Background. Nasal obstruction is a subjective perception of feeling congestion in nasal passages and is a common symptom of various rhinological diseases. Etiology such as dust, air pollution, pets, and decongestants used cause nasal obstruction and impact the sufferer. Purpose. This study aims to determine the characteristics of nasal obstruction in students at the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Sumatera Utara intake year of 2020-2022. Methods. This study used a cross-sectional approach. The population was medical students of the Faculty of Medicine, USU intake year of 2020-2022. The data used were obtained from questionnaires. Results. Of 260 students, (99.2%) experienced nasal obstruction. The highest proportion of characteristics based on demographics was female gender (76.5%), age 19-21 years (82.7%) and year of 2021 (36.5%). The highest proportion of nasal obstruction grade was severe (42.3%). The highest proportion of etiology is caused by cold and dry air exposure (69.2%). The highest proportion of risk factor is the polluted environment (58.8%). The highest proportion of the impact is sleep disorder (76.9%). Conclusion. The majority of nasal obstruction cases are female, 19-21 years old, severe grade, due to cold and dry air, residence exposure to pollution, and sleep disturbance.
