    Abstract
Background. The escalating smartphone addiction raising concerns worldwide. Poor sleep quality, often attributed to excessive smartphone use, can lead to issues with memory, learning, and students' concentration levels, thereby affecting the academic performance of medical students. Objective. To determine the mediating effect of sleep quality on the relationship between smartphone addiction and the academic performance of final-semester students in the Faculty of Medicine at Universitas Sumatera Utara (FK USU). Method. This study aimed to explore the mediating role of sleep quality in the correlation between smartphone addiction and the academic performance of final-semester students in the Faculty of Medicine at Universitas Sumatera Utara (FK USU). Results. Statistical analysis indicated a significant relationship between smartphone addiction and academic performance (p = 0,043), however there is no relationship between smartphone addiction and sleep quality (p = 0.067), as well as sleep quality and academic performance (p = 0.211). Furthermore, there was no mediating effect of sleep quality on the relationship between smartphone addiction and academic performance (β = -0,00499; p = 0,512). Conclusion. There were significant differences between the compared groups in terms of smartphone addiction, academic performance, and sleep quality. However, sleep quality cannot mediate the relationship between smartphone addiction and academic performance among final-semester students in FK USU. The implications of this research underscore the importance of awareness and appropriate management concerning smartphone usage among medical students, even though there is no direct correlation with their academic performance.
