Introduction: Every year in Indonesia it is estimated that 40,000 babies will be
born with Congenital Heart Disease (CHD). Congenital heart disease is the most
common cause of death of all congenital disorders. CHD patients are children who
are still unable to take care of their own health needs. Parents' knowledge of the
disease their child is suffering from can be a factor in success and prevention of
this condition. Therefore, an effort is needed to increase knowledge about CHD not
only among parents of children with CHD but more broadly, namely in society in
general, so that it is hoped that this can help in promotive, preventive and early
detection efforts for CHD. Data regarding general parental knowledge about
congenital heart disease and the educational status of the patient's parents have not
been widely studied. Objective: This study aims to determine the level of knowledge
of parents in the children's outpatient clinic at RSUP Haji Adam Malik Medan
2023. Method: This research is a descriptive study with a cross sectional design.
This data collection method uses a questionnaire. The data collection method used
the technique of distributing questionnaires directly to parents at the children's
polyclinic at RSUP Haji Adam Malik Medan. Results: There were 80 respondents
in this study consisting of 37 men and 43 women and 45 respondents whose children
had a history of CHD and 35 whose children did not have a history of CHD. Overall
48.8% have good knowledge. Women have better knowledge. Conclusion: The
overall level of knowledge of parents at Haji Adam Malik Hospital Medan in 2023
regarding congenital heart disease in children is good.
