An Analysis of Women Empowerment In The Movie Cinderella (2021)

Abstract

Women empowerment has been an issue of immense discussion and contemplation over the last few decades worldwide. This research discusses about women’s empowerment in Cinderella movies, and investigates further about the characters that showed women power in this movie. This thesis discusses the discovery of woman struggle contained in the movie Cinderella and also the struggle of the characters in realizing their dream. Cinderella as a main character finds the rules that restrict women's freedom deeply confine women’s movement in life and in the process of realizing her dream. The purpose of the study is to identify the women’s struggles and how they empower themselves portrayed in the movie through the female characters. Method used in this thesis is descriptive qualitative method. Data used in this thesis were the dialogues, characters, characters’ attitudes and beliefs that were related to the research questions in this research. In addition, Jo Rowland’s empowerment theory is employed as the main theoretical basis to answer the research question. The finding of the research shows that in this movie there are depictions of women's struggle to get the her dream and how they empower themselves.
