The purpose of this research is to determine the percentage of kinship, separation time, and age between Tanjungbalai Malay and Karo Langkat. This research uses quantitative and qualitative methods. Data collection techniques in research are observation, interviews and documentation. The instruments used in this research were a list of questions in the form of basic vocabulary according to Swadesh, voice recording equipment and writing equipment. The theory used in this research is lexicostatistics. This research was carried out in two areas, namely Pulau Simardan Village, Tanjungbalai City and Sampe Raya Village, Bahorok Village, Langkat Regency. After the data was analyzed from the 200 vocabularies, the results did not get gloss that was not taken into account and words isolating bound morphemes, 13 pairs of words that were identical, 6 pairs of words that had phonemic correspondence, 27 pairs of words that were phonetically similar and 20 pairs of words that had one different phonemes. There are 66 related words and 134 unrelated words out of a total of 200 vocabularies. The percentage of BMT and BKL obtained was 33%, and BMT and BKL have a kinship relationship at the family level (stock). Tanjungbalai Malay and Karo Langkat were a single language from 2756 -2354 years ago. The Tanjungbalai Malay language and the Karo Langkat language began to separate from their protolanguage starting in 731-331 BC.
