reasons why newborns need to be treated in the neonatal intensive care unit. Down
score commonly used as a basis for evaluating respiratory distress clinically in infants,
while blood gas analysis can be a parameter for identifying respiratory distress in
infants. The combine approach for diagnosing using the blood gas value and score
downe offer a better change of finding an accurate diagnosis, prognosis and proper
therapeutic regimen. Objective. The aims of this study is to determine the association
between blood gas analysis and Downe score in the newborns with respiratory distress
in Neonatology unit of H. Adam Malik General Hospital Medan. Method. this type of
research is an analytical observational study with cross sectional design. The collected
data are a secondary data from the medical records of newborns with respiratory
distress in the Neonataology Unit of H. Adam Malik General Hospital Medan in the
years 2022-2023, the data taken using a consecutive sampling. Result and Discussion.
The results of the analysis using the Kruskal-Wallis test between pH and HCO3 for the
Downe score show a values (p<0.05), while PO2 and PCO2 show values (p>0.05).
Furthermore, the analysis using ANOVA on BE for the Downe score shows a value
(p<0.05). Conclusion. There is a significant association between pH, BE, and HCO3
with the Downe score, but there is no association between PO2 and PCO2 with the
degree of the Downe score.
