Waste import is a global problem that can be solved with intensive international cooperation. The import of waste by the United States to Indonesia in 2021 has had a negative impact on Indonesian environment, leading to many protests. This study aims to analyze international legal aspects related to the import of waste from the United States to Indonesia in 2021, focusing on the 1989 Basel Convention. This research will discuss how the Basel Convention provides an international legal framework for controlling the movement of hazardous waste across countries, and identify the relevance of this convention in the context of importing waste from the United States to Indonesia.
This study uses normative legal research methods by collecting and analyzing international legal documents, such as the text of the Basel Convention, as well as literature studies related to waste imports, environmental protection and international law. The analysis will be conducted by considering relevant legal aspects, including the definition of hazardous waste, the obligations of producing and receiving countries, and the environmental protection efforts undertaken by each country.
The conclusions of this research will provide a deeper understanding of the relevance of the Basel Convention in regulating the import of waste between countries, especially in the context of importing waste from the United States to Indonesia in 2021. The results of this research can provide insight for the government and related institutions to strengthen supervision of waste imports and improve environmental protection in the context of international law
