Background: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is the third leading cause of death in the world and is expected to become the third leading cause of mortality globally by 2030, indicating the urgency of serious treatment of this condition. The development of the "Paru Sehat" application by the Department of Pulmonology, Faculty of Medicine, University of North Sumatra is a very positive initiative in providing support and education to COPD patients. This innovation has the potential to improve disease management, improve patient quality of life, and reduce complications associated with COPD.
Objective: To assess the efficacy of the “Paru Sehat” smartphone application in enhancing COPD and non-pharmacotherapy knowledge in COPD patients.
Methods: Observational study with a cross-sectional design using the Bristol COPD Knowledge Questionnaire (BCKQ) in patients diagnosed as stable COPD patients at the Outpatient Clinic at RS Pendidikan Universitas Sumatera Utara Medan who will be assessed before and after educational exposure to the "Paru Sehat" application two times a week for 4 weeks. The test used to analyze the relationship between the independent and dependent variables is the dependent T test. To obtain differences in knowledge of COPD and COPD non-pharmacotherapy in COPD patients.
Results: Based on statistical tests, it was reported that the BCKQ pretest scores to assess knowledge of COPD disease from the sample was 15.92 + 3.796 and the posttest score was 19.56 + 3.686. Then, the BCKQ pretest scores to assess COPD non-pharmacotherapy knowledge of the sample was 7.52 + 2.023 and the post-test score was 10.08 + 2.379. There was a difference between the pretest-pposttest values of the sample group regarding COPD disease and COPD non-pharmacotherapy knowledge, respectively 3.64 (p<0.001) and 2.56 (p<0.001).
Conclusion : The educational content of the "Paru Sehat" application significantly increases the level of COPD knowledge and COPD non-pharmacotherapy knowledge.
