The Shinsengumi is a group of samurai formed to maintain peace in Kyoto during the Bakumatsu period. This samurai group caught the attention of Hideaki Sorachi, the creator of the anime Gintama, who then incorporated Shinsengumi elements into Gintama as a part of Japanese history. This research aims to analyze the application of Bushido values and the social role of Shinsengumi in the anime Gintama. The research employs a descriptive analysis method by watching Gintama, followed by analyzing conversations, moments, and scenes. The theories used for analysis include Bushido theory, social role theory, and literary sociology theory. The Bushido theory assists in analyzing the Bushido values applied to Shinsengumi in the anime Gintama, the social role theory helps analyze the social roles of Shinsengumi in Gintama, and the literary sociology theory aids in analyzing the literary work, namely the anime Gintama. Through this research, it can be concluded that in the anime Gintama, Shinsengumi applies Bushido values and fulfills their social roles as law-enforcing samurai, security guards, and maintainers of order in Edo.
