Background COPD patients with high severity are often correlated with significant weight loss. However, this is often ignored by some patients that weight loss actually worsens their respiratory conditions. This is also related to the patient's quality of life which worsens along with weight loss that is not immediately given appropriate treatment. Objective To assess the relationship that occurs between the severity of COPD and the BMI of patients Methods. This study was conducted with an analytical design with a cross-sectional approach. Data were collected based on medical records of COPD patients at Prof. Chairuddin P. Lubis Hospital recorded from 2022 to 2023. The number of samples included in this study was 280 samples. Results and Discussion. The results showed a significant correlation between COPD severity and BMI (p-value<0.05). However, the correlation is very low with a correlation value of 0.192, so although there is significance, the relationship shown is very weak. In addition, it was also seen that patients with severe to very severe severity had a high risk of being underweight. Based on the age category data, it was also found that the prevalence of elderly patients was higher than adult and preelderly patients with a percentage of 60%, and 50% of them had severe to very severe COPD. Conclusion. It can be concluded that the severity of COPD has a relationship with the patient's BMI. In addition, the age variable is also one of the factors that can increase the prevalence of COPD and its further severity.en_US
