This research analyzes the use of keigo (honorific language in Japanese) in the
Wano Kuni chapter of the One Piece Anime. The purpose of this research is to
identify the keigo used in the Wano Kuni chapter of the One Piece Anime and
describe the use of keigo used in the Wano Kuni chapter of the One Piece Anime.
The theory used in this research is Mizutani's theory in 1987 and the division of
keigo in the Keigo Guidelines written by the Japanese Cultural Council in 2019. In
Mizutani's theory, there are 7 factors that influence the usage level of honorific
language, namely familiarity, age, social relations, social status, gender, group
membership, and situation. In the 2019 Keigo Guidelines, keigo are divided into
five types, namely sonkeigo, kenjougo, teineigo, bikago, and teichougo. The
research method used is a free-involved listening technique. The results of the
research show that there are five types of keigo in accordance with the 2019 Keigo
Guidelines contained in the Wano Kuni chapter of the One Piece Anime and keigo
is used when meeting someone for the first time, to respect the person to whom one
owes a debt of gratitude, to express gratitude , when discussing and speaking with
someone who has a higher social position, and when discussing and speaking with
respected people.
