Nicotine, the main stimulant in tobacco, with a global usage prevalence of about 32.6% in male and 6.5% in female, has a stimulating effect on the ganglion in small doses or as a block in large doses. Insomnia, experienced by more than a third of the Indonesian total population, with more than 10% experiencing significant symptoms, is often associated with nicotine use, especially in heavy smokers who tend to experience shallow and disturbed sleep. The research sample consisted of students from the Medical Faculty of Universitas Sumatera Utara who had been selected through consecutive sampling and this research carried out in the environment of Universitas Sumatera Utara's Medical Faculty. In this study, the dependent variables are nicotine dependence and insomnia, and the data was analyzed using Spearman bivariate correlation test. Results. Insomnia had been linked to nicotine use, which affected neurotransmitters and influenced the parts of the brain that regulate sleep. Conclusion. It can be concluded that nicotine dependence and insomnia have significant relation with positive correlation.
