Abstract
Introduction: Polycythemia is a condition where there is an increase in the number
of erythrocytes in the blood (erythrocytosis) caused by increased production of
erythropoietin as a form of compensation for hypoxic conditions. Patients suffering
from polycythemia are at risk of experiencing thrombosis where the main cause of
mortality and morbidity in polycythemia patients is the emergence of
cardiovascular complications caused by thrombosis. Aim: To see the prevalence of
polycythemia in medical faculty students at the University of North Sumatra.
Method: This research is a descriptive study that uses a cross sectional method and
the sampling technique in this research uses a total sampling technique to represent
the entire population used with a total population of 80 medical students at the
University of North Sumatra class of 2018 and 2019. Data collection was carried
out by collecting data randomly. directly by coming to the University of North
Sumatra Polyclinic. Results: The results of research on the distribution of
polycythemia prevalence showed that of the 80 samples, 14 people experienced
polycythemia (17.5%), while 66 people (82.5%) did not experience polycythemia.
Conclusion: The distribution of the prevalence of polycythemia characteristics
according to gender, BMI, and highland origin concluded that the majority of
polycythemia samples were female, overweight, and came from the lowlands.
