dc.description.abstractIntroduction: Polycythemia is a condition where there is an increase in the number of erythrocytes in the blood (erythrocytosis) caused by increased production of erythropoietin as a form of compensation for hypoxic conditions. Patients suffering from polycythemia are at risk of experiencing thrombosis where the main cause of mortality and morbidity in polycythemia patients is the emergence of cardiovascular complications caused by thrombosis. Aim: To see the prevalence of polycythemia in medical faculty students at the University of North Sumatra. Method: This research is a descriptive study that uses a cross sectional method and the sampling technique in this research uses a total sampling technique to represent the entire population used with a total population of 80 medical students at the University of North Sumatra class of 2018 and 2019. Data collection was carried out by collecting data randomly. directly by coming to the University of North Sumatra Polyclinic. Results: The results of research on the distribution of polycythemia prevalence showed that of the 80 samples, 14 people experienced polycythemia (17.5%), while 66 people (82.5%) did not experience polycythemia. Conclusion: The distribution of the prevalence of polycythemia characteristics according to gender, BMI, and highland origin concluded that the majority of polycythemia samples were female, overweight, and came from the lowlands.en_US
