dc.description.abstractParkinson's is a neurological disease that is rapidly increasing to surpass Alzheimer's disease. Parkinson's disease causes a decrease in the number of dopaminergic neurons which can lead to disturbances in attention, memory and motivation. Damage to dopaminergic nerve cells is caused by increased levels of free radicals (ROS) in tissues and cells, thus inducing cell death signals. Red palm oil (MSM) has compounds such as vitamin E, Provitamin A, carotenoids, phenolic compounds, triacylglycerol and phytosterols so that it has excellent antioxidant activity in fighting free radicals (ROS) so that it can be an alternative treatment for Parkinson's disease. This study aims to determine whether MSM affects motor function, MDA levels, and the percentage of apoptotic cells in histopathological features in the brain organs of Parkinson's model mice. This research is purely experimental using Parkinson's experimental models with paraquat induction. Experimental animals were divided into 3 groups, namely the control group (K), paraquat (PQT) and paraquat and MSM groups (PQT + MSM). The motor function of Parkinson's model mice uses beam test and cylinder test methods. Blood tests with MDA and continued histological examination of the brain substantia nigra. The results showed that there was a significant difference (p = 0.002) in motor test results between treatment groups. From the results of motor function tests, beam test values (12.8 ± 5.0) and cylinder tests (43.7 ± 19.0) were obtained which showed better results in the group given red palm oil. In the MDA examination there was also a significant difference (p = 0.002) in the inter-treatment group, the MDA levels of the red palm oil group were lower when compared to the paraquat group. The results also showed that there was a significant difference (p = 0.002) in the percentage of apoptosis of neuron cells between treatment groups. The conclusion of this study is that red palm oil affects motoric function, MDA levels, and cell count apoptosis in mice that experience Parkinson's.en_US
