Background. Cancer is one of the leading causes of death in the world and primary liver cancer ranks sixth as the most diagnosed cancer with the most common type being hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). The most used serologic marker of HCC is alpha-fetoprotein (AFP), which has been found to increase as liver inflammation and fibrosis progress. Liver damage will also increase the levels of SGOT and SGPT, liver enzymes commonly used in routine liver function tests. Objectives. To analyze the relationship between alpha-fetoprotein with SGOT and SGPT. Methods. This study was an observational analytic study with a cross-sectional design on 67 patients' medical record data taken by purposive sampling through the medical record installation of RSUP. H. Adam Malik Medan Hospital. Data were analyzed by Spearman correlation test using Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) version 25. Results. Based on the results of the study, it was found that the highest frequency of HCC was found in males and the with the age range of 45 - 60 years. Bivariate analysis showed there was a correlation between AFP and SGOT (p-value <0.05) with a moderate correlation coefficient, with a value of 0.337. However, there was no significant correlation between AFP and SGPT. Conclusion. AFP and SGOT levels have a significant association in HCC.en_US
