Background. Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is the most common head and neck malignancy. There is correlation between high level of ALDH1A1 in the incidence of NPC. Objective. The aim of this research was to assess ALDH1A1 about the invasion on
carcinoma of the nasopharynx.. Method. This research was an analytic observational study with a cross-sectional design. Paraffin block samples of NPC patients treated at Haji Adam Malik General Hospital were subjected to RT-PCR examination to measure ALDH1A1 levels. Results. 25 NPC patients participated with a mean ALDH1A1 of 0.03. There was an increase in ALDH1A1 levels in the histopathological type of non-keratinized SCC. Still, there was no significant relationship between ALDH1A1 levels and the histopathological type of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (p = 0.187). There was an increase in ALDH1A1 levels in the tumor expansion types T3 and T4. Elevated levels of ALDH1A1 were found to be higher in cervical lymph nodes N2 and N3 compared to N0 and N1. The increase in ALDH1A1 levels in NPC was found to be higher in advanced stages III and IV than in stages I and II. Conclusion. There was a linear relationship between ALDH1A1 levels and histopathological type of NPC, tumor expansion types of NPC, enlarged lymph nodes of NPC and clinical stages of NPC, although there was no statistical significant relationship.
