Dental Floss is a thread used to remove food residue and plaque in the interproximal
area. One natural fiber that has the potential to be used as dental floss is barangan
banana stem fiber. This study aims to determine the comparison of the tensile strength
of Barangan banana stem fibers (Musa acuminata Linn.) with and without the
alkalization process as natural dental floss. The samples used were bamboo fiber
dental floss with the Soul brand and barangan banana stem fiber (length: 16cm;
diameter: 0.1 mm). as many as 10 samples for each group (n=10), namely group I
(bamboo fiber dental floss with the Soul brand), group II (barangan banana stem
fiber alkalized with 5% NaOH) and Group III (barangan banana stem fiber without
alkalized NaOH 5%). Tensile strength testing uses a universal testing machine with a
load cell of 50 Kgf, speed of 20 cm/minute and grip distance of 5 cm. Data analysis
was carried out using One-Way ANOVA and Post Hoc LSD tests. The mean and
standard deviation values obtained were in group I (dental floss from bamboo fiber
with the Soul brand), group II (barangan banana stem fiber alkalized with 5%
NaOH) and group III (barangan banana stem fiber without alkalization process)
respectively. 1328.26 ± 103.45 MPa, 2904.19 ± 115.27 MPa, and 1733.81 ± 120.51
MPa. There is a significant difference in tensile strength (p<0.05) for each group with
a value of p=0.000. From the research results, it can be concluded that there is a
significant difference in tensile strength between group I (bamboo fiber dental floss with the Soul brand), group II (barangan banana stem fiber alkalized with 5%
NaOH) and Group III (barangan banana stem fiber without 5% NaOH alkalization)
