Background: Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) has infected 35.2 million people worldwide. Peripheral sensory neuropathy is the most frequent neurological complication of HIV infection. This complication has negative impact on quality of life and could even lead to morbidity. Risk factors associated with peripheral sensory neuropathy are elderly, clinical stage of HIV disease, duration of diagnosis and types of anti retroviral. Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the association between clinical stage, duration of diagnosis, and types of anti retroviral with the occurrence of peripheral sensory neuropathy in HIV-positive patients. Methods: This research used a cross-sectional study. 83 research subjects were patients of RSUP Haji Adam Malik who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Chi Square Test was used to identify the associations between clinical stage and types of anti retroviral with the occurrence of peripheral sensory neuropathy. Meanwhile, Mann Whitney Test was used to determine the association between duration of diagnosis with the occurrence of peripheral sensory neuropathy. Results: The research subjects were majority men (62,7%), with high school level of education (69,9%) and work as enterpreneurs (33,7%). The results showed that there were significant associations between clinical stage and duration of diagnosis with the occurrence of peripheral sensory neuropathy (p <0,001 dan p = 0,02). However, there was no significant association between types of antiretroviral with the occurrence of peripheral sensory neuropathy (p = 0,166). Conclusions: There was an association between clinical stage with the occurrence of peripheral sensory neuropathy in HIV-positive patients.en_US
