dc.description.abstractBackground: Preeclampsia (PE) as part of the spectrum of hypertensive disorders in pregnancy is one of the most commonly encountered obstetric issues. With an incidence rate reaching 2.3%, the management of PE included optimization of micronutrients such as zinc (Zn). This trace element played a crucial role as an antioxidant in preventing oxidative stress in PE. Therefore, identifying the differences in serum Zn levels between PE and normal pregnancies may provide a representative insight into its role during pregnancy. Method: This analytical case-control study was conducted at the Haji Adam Malik General Hospital and affiliated hospitals of the Universitas Sumatera Utara, Medan, Indonesia, from August to November 2023. The authors included patients with gestational age >20 weeks, confirmed PE based on the 2013 American College of Gynecology (ACOG) criteria, and willing to participate in this study. Serum Zn levels were measured after the diagnosis was established for subsequent analytic testing. Results: Researchers included 36 patients (18 individuals each for the PE and normal pregnancy groups), with average ages of 31.9 ± 6.5 and 30.8 ± 4.7, respectively. There were significant differences in systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), and mean arterial pressure (MAP) in both observation groups; however, this was not observed in serum Zn level measurements (54.2 ± 14.2 and 51.7 ± 32.8; P = 0.832), indicating no significant difference between the two groups. Furthermore, the researchers also found no difference in serum Zn values within the spectrum of PE (P = 0.774). Conclusion: There were no significant differences found in serum Zn levels between PE patients and normal pregnancies. Additionally, there were no observed differences in serum Zn values within the spectrum of PE patients.en_US
