The work environment is everything that is around employees that can affect the implementation of work. The work environment consists of the physical environment and the non-physical environment, the physical environment in the form of: work equipment, workplace temperature, crowdedness and density, noise, workspace area, and so on while the non-physical environment is in the form of: working relationships formed in the agency between superiors and subordinates and fellow employees. The purpose of this study was to gain knowledge and determine the role of the work environment on employee performance. The sample of this research is the General and Personnel Subdivision Employees of the North Sumatra Province Transportation Office. The data used in this study are data obtained from questionnaires and observations. The results of this study indicate that the work environment has a role in employee performance at the General and Personnel Subdivision of the North Sumatra Provincial Transportation Office. So it can be concluded that if the work environment is good, then employee performance will be higher and conversely, if the work environment is bad, then employee performance will be lower.
