Background: Artificial sweeteners are additional ingredients that can provide a sweet taste in food and drinks, but have no nutritional value. Cyclamate is a common artificial sweetener used by the food or beverage industry which is very soluble in water and has a sweetness level of 30 times that of granulated sugar. Cyclamate is an artificial sweetener whose use is an permitted, but must not exceed the usage limit. The use of cyclamate in powdered drinks is regulated by the Food and Drug Monitoring Agency Number 11 of 2019, namely 350 mg/kg. Purpose: This studyaims to determine whether samples of powdered drinks sold in Medan city contain the artificial sweetener cyclamate. Method: This research was tested qualitatively and quantitatively using a sampling technique based on the simple random method. Qualitative tests were carried out using the precipitation method using HCl 10%, BaCl2 10% and NaNO2 10% reagents, with positive results of the formation of a white precipitate. Quantitative tests were carried out using UV spectrophotometry at a maximum wavelength of 300 nm. Result: Qualitative analysis showed positive results in 2 samples out of 5 samples, namely sample B and sample C. Cyclamate levels in samples A, B, C, D and E were respectively 5,3731 mg/kg; 8,8856 mg/kg; 7,2785 mg/kg; 4,1356 mg/kg; 3,7338 mg/kg. Based on the results obtained, the five samples did not exceed the limit for the use of cyclamate in drinks according to the Food and Drug Monitoring Agency Number 11 of 2019, namely 350 mg/kg. Conclusion: Of the five sampels tested, the cyclamate levels in powdered drinks sold in the city of Medan still meet the requirements set by the Food and Drug Monitoring Agency Number 11 of 2019.en_US
