Academic anxiety is a condition experienced by individuals that causes feelings of worry, anxiety and fear of facing academic tasks. One of the reasons is because of social comparison. Social comparison is a way for someone to find and see knowledge about themselves accurately by comparing themselves with other people. This research aims to determine the relationship between social comparison and academic anxiety in undergraduate students at the University of North Sumatra who are working on their thesis with a research sample of 386 students collected using accidental sampling technique. The measuring instrument used in this research was prepared by researchers based on social comparison theory by Festinger (in Hogg and Vaughan, 2022) and academic anxiety by Ottens (1991). Data were analyzed using the Pearson Product Moment test. Based on data analysis, a coefficient (rxy) = 0.452 was obtained with a significance of p<0.05, meaning that there was a relationship between social comparison and academic anxiety in USU undergraduate students who were working on their thesis.
