The security of communication in the Internet of Things (IoT) is becoming increasingly important due to the exchange of sensitive data between IoT devices. The Secure Sockets Layer (SSL)/Transport Layer Security (TLS) protocol is used to secure communication in the IoT environment. One key aspect of SSL/TLS is the authentication method used. In this research, we study the efficiency composition of authentication methods based on Elliptic Curve Diffie-Hellman Ephemeral (ECDHE) with Elliptic Curve Digital Signature Algorithm (ECDSA) and Rivest-Shamir-Adleman (RSA) algorithms on the IoT communication protocol on the ESP32 microprocessor. The aim of this research is to compare the performance of these two authentication methods in terms of speed and security. We conducted experimental tests using the ESP32 device by comparing the time required for authentication using the ECDHE-ECDSA and ECDHE-RSA methods. In addition, we also analyzed the level of security that can be achieved by both methods. The results show that the ECDHE-ECDSA authentication method has a faster speed compared to ECDHE-RSA on the ESP32 microprocessor. However, ECDHE-RSA provides a higher level of security because it uses the proven strong RSA algorithm. Therefore, the selection of authentication methods should consider the speed and security requirements needed in IoT applications. This research contributes to understanding the efficiency composition of authentication methods in IoT communication protocols using the ESP32 microprocessor. The results of this research can be used as a basis for selecting the appropriate authentication method according to security and performance needs in IoT applications.
