Thermal Characterization of Asphalt Modification with Polyethylene Plastic Waste Grafted Maleic Anhydrous and Initiator of Dicumyl Peroxide
Abstract
Research on the thermal characteristics of asphalt modification with
polyethylene (PE) plastic waste grafted with maleic anhydrous and dicumyl peroxide
initiator. This research uses 3 stages, the first stage, the used PE is washed and
prepared, then the second stage PE is refluxed using xylene solvent at a temperature
of 135°C with maleic anhydrous and initiator dicumyl peroxide which produces
polyethylene grafting maleic anhydrous (PE-g-MA) and in this stage The final stage
is the mixing stage of PE-g-MA with 60170 pen asphalt which is made with 4 types of
variations in the weight addition of PE-g-MA of 4%, 6% 8% and 10% in 100 grams
of asphalt weight. Modified asphalt is made by mixing pen 60/70 asphalt and PE-gMA
in a motorized stirrer at a temperature of J 80°C for 30 minutes which is then
characterized by a viscosity test using Brookfield Thermosel Viscosity and a thermal
analysis test using Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA). The asphalt viscosity test
results show the optimum value for variations of PE-g-MA modified asphalt with
variations in the addition of 4% PE-g-MA. The results of thermal characterization
using TGA show that PE-g-MA nwdified asphalt with variations in the addition of
4% PE-g-MA shows decomposition of 1 stage of mass loss, namely at a temperature
of 559.32°C with a mass loss of 80.24%.
