Manufacture and Characterization of Polymer Concrete from Duck Egg Shell Powder and Areca Nut Fiber with Epoxy Resin
Abstract
This research has been conducted on the manufacture of polymer concrete based on duck eggshell powder and areca nut fiber with epoxy resin adhesive with characterization of physical properties including density test, porosity test and water absorption; mechanical properties including flexural strength test, compressive strength and tensile strength and SEM-EDX microstructure analysis. This study aims to determine the highest composition mixture by characterizing the physical and mechanical properties of each sample. Composition variations were made with the ratio of sand: eggshell powder, namely (2:1) or (66.6: 33.4), (64.6: 31.4), (62.6: 29.4), (60.6: 27.4), (58.6: 25.4) and areca nut fiber 0%, 4%, 8%, 12%, 16% with the addition of 20%, 25% and 30% epoxy resin. The process of making polymer concrete is done by weighing, mixing, molding using Hotpress with a pressure of 10 tons and a temperature of 90^°C for 20 minutes. The results of this test show that the highest physical properties are density (1.61 g⁄cm3), porosity (7.55%) and water absorption (6.75%). While the highest composition of mechanical properties in flexural strength (54.13 MPa), compressive strength (29.20 MPa) and tensile strength (13.92 MPa). The results of microstructure and elemental analysis show the voids formed, the distribution of epoxy resin and the elements loaded on each polymer concrete sample. Based on research results, the physical and mechanical properties have met SNI 03-0691-1996 standards which can be used as a substitute for conventional concrete with quality D in the construction sector.
