dc.description.abstractThis research aims to analyze the musicological elements and textual meaning of the popular song Simalungun by Sapna Aria Sitopu. Sapna Aria Sitopu is an educator and vocal teaching staff at the Ethnomusicology Study Program, Faculty of Cultural Sciences, University of North Sumatra and a Simalungun ethnic singer. Sapna Aria Sitopu is trying to save the traditional art of simalungun singing which has been forgotten by many people. This research highlights 3 popular Simalungun songs by Sapna Aria Sitopu, namely: Tangis Na Inang, Bulung Humangei, and Bujur Do Helamon using the theory of music description introduced by Bruno Netll and William P. Malm. The method used in this research is a qualitative research method by conducting observations, interviews and recordings. The results of the research show that the meaning of the text of the popular song Simalungun by Sapna Aria Sitopu is dominated by themes of sadness. For the musicological element, his popular songs have typical English characteristics and melodic structures using 4/4 time signatures.en_US
