This research aims to determine the manufacture of the Malay Pakpung Gendang musical instrument in Tanjung Morawa District, Deli Serdang Regency. The theoretical basis in this research discusses music theory(Khasima Susumu), understanding organology, traditional music, Malay drums, processes and playing techniques. Data collection techniques used in this research include observation, interviews, and literature study, and analyzed using qualitative descriptive techniques. From this research, several conclusions were obtained regarding the techniques for making traditional Pakpung musical instruments, including: 1) The structure of the Malay Pakpung drum includes several parts, namely, the drum body, drum string, drum cover/drum wrapper, 2) The sound source of the Malay Pakpung drum comes from the skin, which is at the top of the drum and is played by hitting the skin. 3) The process of making Pakpung Malay Gendang in Tanjung Morawa District, Deli Serdang Regency includes several materials and equipment, namely wood (coconut, mahogany, jackfruit and rambutan), rattan, leather, drills, sanding machines, tools, axes, machetes, chisels, saws , knife raut, 4) the stages in making the Malay pakpung drum include several stages, the first stage, making the body of the drum. The second stage, make the drum cover/drum wrapper. The third stage is making carvings on the drum body using the previous process, namely sanding. The fourth stage is making the drum rope/pull the drum. And the final stage is the process of combining the ingredients (finishing). And several conclusions were also obtained from the techniques for playing the traditional pakpung musical instrument, including: 1) how to hit the pung by paying attention to the position of the 2 knuckles of the fingers that are hit at the edge of the drum 2) how to hit the pak by paying attention to all the fingers up to the palm of the hand, hitting it in the middle of the drum and there part of the slap on the drum. This research is intended to be a guide and reference for the public in general who want information related to the process of making the Malay Pakpung Gendang.
