dc.description.abstractThe Presidential Election (Pilpres) is a crucial moment for the Indonesian people in determining the nation’s fate. This research aims to reveal (1) the function of hate speech acts in the discourse of the 2024 Pilpres on social media and (2) the meaning of hate speech in the discourse of the 2024 Pilpres on social media. The data in this study are hate speech acts found in comments on Instagram accounts discussing the 2024 Pilpres on social media from January 1 to November 10, 2023. The results show that out of 152 comments containing hate speech, there are 3 out of 5 types of speech act functions proposed by Yule (1996), namely: representative (117), directive (23), and expressive (12). Representative is the most common type of speech act function found, while declarative and commissive are the speech act functions not found in comments on Instagram accounts discussing the 2024 Pilpres. Additionally, this study also found that out of 152 comments containing hate speech, there are 6 types of meaning of hate speech found, namely: insult (57), defamation (30), blasphemy (35), provocation (22), incitement (4), and spreading fake news (4). Insult is the most common type of hate speech meaning found in comments on Instagram accounts discussing the 2024 Pilpres, while unpleasant acts are the type of hate speech meaning not found.en_US
