Cognitive Appraisal Dynamics of Husbands of Patients with Breast Cancer Who are Undergoing Chemotherapy Treatment

This study aims to describe how the dynamics of cognitive appraisal in husbands who are caring for their wives with breast cancer who are currently undergoing chemotherapy treatment. Providing care to wives with breast cancer can be a source of stress for husbands. This study used a phenomenological qualitative research method to obtain the dynamics of cognitive appraisal. Data collection methods in this study were conducted using interviews and observations with a total of 3 research subjects. The results of the research on the three subjects show that in the stressful appraisal of the primary appraisal there is a negative assessment, namely harm/loss and threat, however, still in a stressful context, there is a challenge where stress is considered to have a positive impact on the three Subjects. In the primary appraisal, there are also benign-positive which has a positive impact on the three Subjects and irrelevant which does not contribute to the well-being of the three Subjects. The three Subjects experienced all primary appraisal assessments except for the irrelevant assessment which was only experienced by Subject 2. In the secondary appraisal, the resources available to the three Subjects were beneficial. The three Subjects received help from people around them. Furthermore, the three subjects stated coping mechanisms, namely, emotion-focused and problem-focused coping.
