This study examines the existence of traditional leaders in the life of the people in Salak district of Pakpak Bharat in 2003-2016. This study discusses how traditional leaders exist in people's life in Salaks district and the factors that influence the change of traditional leader's existence. This research uses the historical method with the first stage is the determination of the topic, heuristic (collection of data related to the topic of research) is carried out in the way of field studies i.e. interviews and library studies with the collection of data from various literature. Second, criticism is to verify the validity of data by (external criticism) choosing the sources that are the sources of the writing and (internal critique) testing the truth of the selected sources. Third, interpretation is the interpretation of sources that have been verified so as to obtain the facts with an integral and logical unity. Fourth, historiography is the writing of facts which have been discovered and rewriting the process of a series of fact that has been verificated. The obstacles the author faced during his research were the very long distance to find the source, the difficulty in finding the necessary documents. The results of this study show that in the beginning the Pakpak society was led by traditional leaders in running government, and played an important role in solving problems both in customs and governance in the respective regions. Factors influencing the existence of traditional leaders with the Law No. 32 of 2004 on Regional Governance. The role of this traditional leader has become a customary figure who still has a great influence in the Pakpak culture.
