Marriage Traditions of Arab Descendants (Study of Arab Descendant Communities in Medan City)
Abstract
This research discusses the marriage traditions of Arab descendants in Medan city.
The purpose of this research is to find out the tradition and meaning of marriage
of people of Arab descent in Medan city. The theory used in the research is the
symbolic interpretative theory proposed by Geertz. This research is a field
research, data collected using observation, interview and documentation methods.
The data was analyzed using descriptive method. The results showed that the
marriage tradition of the Arab descent community in Medan city begins with the
process of selecting a mate by the parents, which means that the parents already
know each other, understand the religious and moral background of the
prospective partner. In addition, there are several traditions such as ta'aruf which
means an introduction to the bride and groom, the fatehah tradition which means a
proposal sentence, the proposal tradition which means embedding the ring, the
tradition of reading maulid habsyi which means asking for blessings to the
Prophet, the rahatan tradition which means pleasing the bride-to-be, the parade
tradition which means announcing the marriage to the community, the burdah
tradition which means asking for blessings to the Prophet, the henna night
tradition which means congratulations to the groom, and the handolok tradition
which means encouraging the married life to be lived. The conclusion of this
research is that the marriage tradition of Arab descendants in Medan city has
several traditions starting with the tradition of selecting a mate, ta'aruf tradition,
fatehah tradition, proposal tradition, Maulid Habsyi recitation tradition, rahatan
tradition, parade tradition, burdah tradition, henna night tradition for the groom,
and handolok tradition.
