The Function and Meaning of Miyako Shrine Omamori in Miyako Island
Abstract
The research focuses on the function and meaning of Miyako Shrine omamori in
Miyako Island. The purpose of this research is to find out the type, form, and function
and meaning of omamori in Miyako Shrine. In collecting data, the methods used in
this research are observation, interview, literature review which is then described by
descriptive qualitative method. The theories used are culture theory, the theory of
functions and meaning, and religion theory. The results of this research indicate the
existence of 7 types of omamori that are most popular in Miyako Shrine. The 7 types
and forms of omamori are as kōun no fuku kaeru mamori in the shape of a frog, negai
goto nasu omamori shaped liked an eggplant, kōun no yottsu ha mamori in the shape
of a clover, kōun no sakura omamori shaped liked a cherry blossom, kōtsū anzen
omamori in rectangular form, yakuyoke kigan omamori in rectangular form,
randoseru omamori shaped like a school bag. Among these 7 types, each serves
various functions, including ensuring safety in traffic, realizing wishes, averting
misfortune, summoning romantic, financial, academic, and popularity luck, as well as
promoting health. The meanings of omamori is symbolizing protection, achievement,
luck, belief, religious rituals, purity, and safety.
